Hey, it might work.

lol, piss on a hot light bulb....and when it shatters, you are pissing on the filament....and then your weiner gets cooked! :Q

well yea, how do i do it without breaking the bulb? i know you can hit the black ciramic (sp) bottom and it will crush in, but i've heard of them imploding when they do that...

Just shake it violently while it's on. The fillament is hot enough that it will just break.

You want to do it? I was just saying how it might be burned out other than by use . I suppose one might drill it...

I think he's trying to burn out the light bulb, not the microwave ;)

Turn it on and let it warm up for about 5 minutes, then spray alcohol on it. The alcohol will evaporate, cooling the surface of the glass, and causing it to develop tiny cracks through which the gas will leak.

Well, I'm really confused about your motives here.. but the easiest way would probably be to apply power for a bit so the filament is heated up well, and then knock the lightbulb with something with enough force to break the filament connection (but not so much force to break the bulb, I guess).

Technically when a light bulb burns out it's because the filament has evaporated, so this wouldn't emulate that behavior perfectly. I guess the best way to emulate it "correctly" would be to just apply higher voltages so that it runs hotter (drastically reducing the lifetime, but probably not as much as you're looking for). Be careful if it's connected to any fuse though, because when the filament connection breaks with a high voltage potential across the bulb there is likely to be an arc with very high current (albeit briefly).

This will not burn out the microwave oven. One can find endless pages of stuff about this just by doing a simple search. Putting metalloids in the uwave cavity will not cause the oven to "short out". That's simply a wive's tale. However, if you put something like steel wool soaked with acetone and it bursts into flames, the plastic in the oven will likely melt. Steel wool by itself is quite a show. So is a lit cigarette!

Cheers!

It is obvious that you hatched a malevolent plan with a burned out light bulb as its center piece. I refuse to be a part of this.

If the metal base comes in contact with the liner of a microwave, you've got a problem. If it's not touching, no prob. So I guess it depends on your microwave :p

It will arc like mad if it gets within a few mm but that's about it. Some sparks, 03 and pit marks. If one leaves Al foil balls in there for a few minutes with continuous arcing going on I suppose the magnetron may overheat. Usually it will just blow a fuse though. Microwaves are fun but things can get out of control real fast and people sometimes hurt themselves when that happens!

Cheers!
