How do I burn copy right protected CD?

I'm trying to burn backup copy of Microsoft Encarta, I own the CD so it's legal for me to make backups.

The problem is everytime I tried the burn with 3 different software, cdrwin, adaptec, and Plextor disc dupe, I end up with some read error and a busted CD-R. Can somebody help? Thanks.

Have you tried to copy the contents of the CD to the harddrive and then burn the CD from a folder on you HD? I had to do hat with a few of my CDs.

I've tried to read from CD to hard drive. Doesn't work, can't read from the source disc when I tried to copy. Must be some copy right technology. Why does Microsoft screw us like this? I'm not doing anything illegal, just trying to protect my original software from CD abusing kiddies.

Is there a better cd burner program somebody can recommand?

Go to gamecopyworld.com...under the cdr utilities is a proggy that will tell you what type of protection is being used on the cd. this will give u a better idea of what to use to rip/burn. might want to try blindread

Thanks everybody! Think I'll try CloneCD. Really mad now, made another coaster. this time Diablo 2 Play CD. It copies but the program refuses to play the copied CD.

Is it just me or are there anybody else who think it's heartbreaking to place the orginal $50 Diablo2 CD into the CD player all the time.

Joe, my guess is you are doing something incorrectly. I have made many "backups" of Microsoft CD's with no problems.

CloneCD is a great program. You need to go to their site to make sure your CDrom player and/or recorder are supported by their program. Try looking here http://www.elby.de/CloneCD/english/hardware.htm.

Nero is another great burning program (Nero Burning Rom).

For trickier CD's you should make sure you are burning at 1X or 2X not 8X or something too fast. Also, like someone else already said, make an image file first (copy first to the harddrive).

If you search around, there are pleanty of sites that give exact settings and great advice for burning any CD's.

Microsoft do not use copy protection on their CDs.

If you cannot copy encarta, then there is something wrong with your setup. Check that your CD reader has a clean lens, and that your CDs are free from dust and scratches.

As for games, the vast majority are copy protected. I believe CloneCD is one of the few programs that can copy these discs.

On some MS products including certain versions of Encarta, they over burn the originals to limit the ability to copy them. You will need good software that supports over burning. Sometimes you can make an image and then burn from the image. You might have a hard time making it a bootable cd though. Good luck.

It is right about the Encarta disk as I have tried to copy it with Plexwriter and Adaptec software and have been unsuccessful.

yeah, i don't think MS uses protection on their stuff... only because a lot of their software are hundreds of dollars, and they know the average person would like to back it up incase accidents happen (they're also happy to replace items if things do happen though... i knew somebody that had an accident with the encarter CD, and all they had to do was send the broken pieces in and got a new one).

JumpJoe--I burned a working backup of my legally owned Diablo II Play cd with CloneCD and Plex reader/writer. I had to uncheck a couple of the defaults, and it took about 4 minutes longer to burn than normal. I think I unchecked "intelligent ******" and can't remember what else. Stuff that looked like it would make the Plex dig a bit deeper.

JumpJoe:

I have tried it myself and realize MS has two version of Encarta. The regular version is easy to copy (with several steps), but the Deluxe version is impossible.
