How do I burn a 685 meg .avi into a dvd player readable format?

My DVD player can run VCDs and SVCDs, and of course DVDs. I have Nero 6. If I try and burn as an SVCD, it converts the .avi to SVCD, and then when it tries to burn it says that the CD doesn't have enough room...so, really I'd like to keep it as the .avi format I guess.

As far as I know the video for VCD and SVCD must be in mpeg format. I think MPEG-2 for SVCD's. You may not have any other option then to compress it and lose some quality.

Check this thread. Like I say there try dvd2svcd. It will do avi to SVCD or DVD.

You can just encode at a higher bitrate than the video.
