How do I block MySpace?

I logged on to the router and went into the Restrict Access area and entered http://www.myspace.com/ into the Website Blocking by URL Address area. I then saved my settings. For some reason it doesn't block the site. I can still access the site. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks!

I figured it out. I had to select All MAC Addresses and IP Addresses.

Oh man my 15 year old is going to be pissed!

Even more fun is to put the blocking in the hosts file on the computer.
Then you can point the request wherever you like.

Like to a page with a big smiley face :)

He got around my block already. He used some site called sodacontrol. None of his pictures show up so I'm not sure what's going on. He said something about a proxy server. He thinks it's real funny. :| So how do I get around these proxy servers or whatever he is using?

In Xp and 2k:
c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc
there is a handly little file called hosts.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There it is. Don't mess with the last entry there, or you'll break many things.
Use the examples shown to direct a hostname to an IP. This can be handy for intenal websites/servers when you don't have your own dns server for resolving inside the network, and your router does not properly pass the traffic.

Take the dang computer away then. That's parental control!

To stop proxies is a bit more involved.
If you had a linux box between you and the net you could use snort.
Lots of businesses and schools use it for just that.
Might want to look at a firewall distribution like ipcop at www.ipcop.org.

I use pfsense and can control everything that comes in and out.

Dansguardian on linux or *bsd works well for that too. I have a private school and a parent like you with those setups. It is not trivial to set up and configure.

Sounds like a clever kid. Eventually he'll outwit you to the point where you'll have to take his computer away : )

That's why kids shouldn't have PCs in their rooms. THey should be in open areas so you can monitor what they are doing. ;) Of course, that's why *my* PC is in the basement in my own little office. heh heh.

Yup. Password protect it, or else lock his computer out of the router completely using a MAC filter.

lock down the account. If they can't put in a proxy server, because their account is restricted, then they can't use one.
