Hello,

How do I block the Intstant Messenging clients on a network??? AOL runs on port 5190 by default, so....bam. I blocked that on my firewall and thought all was well. No, the evil ah heck reroutes itself through port 80!!

Soooo......how can I block it from our users? I am sick of people wasting time chatting instead of getting something done!!

Thanks

One word: Policies

Don't let your users install programs on their computers.
Make a standard install, and include whatever "non productivity" programs seem reasonable(Winamp, etc, stuff that doesn't take away from working time, but that people will appreciate).

Trying to find technical solutions to policy/discipline/social problems is a battle you're bound to lose.

hmm...you could change the entry for the aol server IP in your dns server so that it points to an invalid address.

that should do the trick as long as they dont find out, but i bet you best option would be policies.
