I can't figure out how to blend just the edges to make a smooth transition between pictures - only making the entire added image transparent....

I'm photoshop illiterate :(

Layer > Add Layer Mask > reveal all

Then select black as your foreground color, white as your background color, select the gradient tool, click on the edge of your picture, drag towards the center of your picture, and release.

Thanks guys, really appreciate your help!

notfred - how do you select foreground & back ground colors?

zug - how do you blend to transparent? I'm just learning, so the command would help trmendously.

See the toolbar with all your tools in it? See the two colored boxes at the bottom? The front one is foreground color, the back one is background color. click on them to change the color.

In photoshop 6 it's about halfway down on the right hand side of the toolbar, and shares a spot with the paint bucket. If you see a paintbucket, click and hold til lthe menu comes up and then you can select the gradient tool. It jsut looks like a rectangle that fades from white to black. If you're using photoshop 7, it's possible that they moved it. In that case, look for the white and black fading rectangle, or hold the mouse over ech tool and it will tell you the name.
