How do I benchmark in quake 1.27?

I patched with 1.27 and can't seem to benchmark anymore. demo demo001 doesnt work. it loads a different map but doesn't run it. demo torture1 just brings me back to the main menu. Also, is there a way to get the FPS of a single or multiplayer game? I know its timedemo 1 for the demos, but how do I do it for a game I am playing? Thanks in advance.
