I'm about to buy a domain name, but i don't want my info to be available to the public through WHOIS. I don't feel like paying $10 to Domains Through Proxy to hide it either. Is there a way to hide it for free?

For free? Not that I'm aware of. GoDaddy has those anonymous listings, and YOU ARE IN LUCK!

"Protect yourself from spam, scams, prying eyes and worse. Just $12.00/yr! Today's Special - Only $9.00!" (plus the registration fee :D)

If you register at godaddy.com, they make your name private to any outside WHOIS lookup. You can only view your info if you're an actual person going to the godaddy site (you have to enter the word in a certain image to access your info).

At least this is the way it is for my site.

that is only partially true.
if you do the searching at godaddy's site, you need to enter the verification code.
any other whois search will show your info.
try here

to keep your info private use the domains by proxy service or have your laywer register it on your behalf
but i'll let you guess which on is cheaper.

What's so bad about paying an extra $9 with GoFather, err... and keeping your info private? Come on, that's 1 movie ticket.

I don't think you can. They take your billing info in most cases, and you can't fake that...

I gave them everything except my phone number. Send me as much mail as you want, I really don't care. Just don't call me... :)

You shouldn't be allowed to. Period. You fake info or hide your info as domain owner and it should be confiscated.

Wrong. My domain is through godaddy and the whois link you provided gives no information, just like any other outside whois. It tells you the domain is registered through godaddy and makes you go there to get the info.

I just don't worry about it, but then again one of my domain names if my full name.......

Anyway just remember if you use false info if you change email addresess and loose your registrar password etc they won't be able to confirm your identity and you could loose your domain.

NameCheap allows you to put n/a for almost everything. You get my name and hometown. I can live with that.

That's what I do but I would recommend using your real name and e-mail address.

Johngute,

I tried my domain in Network Solutions' WHOIS lookup, and none of my personal info comes up. So, I guess GoDaddy does hide your info from everyone else.

i agree. what do you have to hide? if you try putting illegal content on your site, your web host is going to shut you down anyway and they will be happy to give your billing info to any law authority anyway

this is dumb, you want a domain, put your info in, what is the big deal? if you are being stalked, then don't buy a domain

RossMan,

I just tried my xmoz.com domain, which was created with GoDaddy, and it showed nothing about my name.

But, the nine7.org one wasn't created with GoDaddy, and it does show my name.
