How do I avoid being charged a fee for my credit card?

I have a Chase Amazon card and I paid off the entire balance. I was still charged a finance charge.

If I pay off the entire balance before the end of the statement/period, I'll still get charged interest? Is it just that I have a crappy card?

I'm thinking just closing it completely since I don't want to get charged tiny amounts of interest even though I'm paying the balance in full.

I'm sure I am misunderstanding something.

I apologize, I should have called customer service first. I forgot they were open 24 hours. They said it's because I had a balance the month prior.

This month, if I was to use the card, and pay off the balance before the end date, I would not be charged a finance charge next month.

If you paid by the due date and they received the payment on time, you should not be charged a finance charge.

Unless, the transaction is considered a cash advance, then there is no grace period.

edit, closing a card is considered bad, just dont use it.
