i beg to differ...however...it is most likely to be a male name

so...if i refered to him as a male...and it was indeed a female..do you think she would be pretty offened or would understand because her name is more man like

Calling the receptionist may work them. Ask to speak with Marty and the receptionist may tell you if "he/she" is available.

Plus I don't see how this is that big a problem. It's not like you're going to talk to Marty and refer him/her in the 3rd person all that often.
In emails, you write "Hi Marty,"...at the interview, "Hi Marty", "May I speak to Marty please", "I have an appointment with Marty".

you could just address he/she as Marty. Just write

"Dear Marty, you know where you can shove your unpaid internship"

or just go with

"Thank you for your prompt response. I was excited about this internship possibility, but have decided to live with the dolphins instead.

Yours,
Journer"

and just leave out the greeting alltogether.

Marty could be short for Martin or Martina. Although uncommon, Marty could refer to a woman.

OP, I would so right ahead and use Marty in your greeting since that's what was signed in the reply you got.

Dear Marty,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply.

Blah blah blah.

Being respectful like that is for your girlfriend's parents. At work you refer to people by their name. I am 22 doing a co-op and I refer to my boss, his boss, and everyone else as their first name. It is expected.
