How do I add resolutions to games?

My FW900 has a 16x10 aspect ratio, but few games support these resolutions. I "have" heard at times of being able to modify certain folders in games like Doom 3 and what not to enable 16x9 resolutions, if only for in game graphics. But I was curious if this was possible with other games. Like Warcraft 3 and KOTOR in paticular I would want to play in 1280x800. Any ideas?
