How do I add or delete icons from the System Tray?

Hey, All,

Quick question:

How can I add or delete (or hide/show) icons in the lower right corner of my screen (what I think is called the System Tray)?

I just helped a friend do a new install of Windows XP Pro on a machine I helped her build, and we used an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo. This mobo has 2 LAN ports on it, and since she's using dial-up for her Web access, there is no ethernet cable plugged into either port. (Nor is she on any kind of network.)

In her System Tray, there are two little icons with red X's thru them, indicating the 2 ports are not being used. She'd like to de-clutter the System Tray a bit by removing those two icons. I can't figure out how to get rid of them.

Any suggestions?

Ken

PS: While I'm at it, anyone also know how to get rid of the Asus splash screen that appears during start-up? It appears for about 5 seconds before the Windows screens do.

I would say that this is also controlled by parameter in the BIOS.

You might want to go into control panel and uninstall these devices, restart, go into BIOS and disable LAN port functioning there.
