How do I add a password to a network share on Windows XP home?

you have to give share permissions to users/groups, which already have passwords.

at least, thats how it works in 2k.

Do these people already have access? I am not exactly sure of your question. If you are trying to get their access working go to users in control panel and put in his logon name and password for the security. If this is not what you are asking post back.

I think he wants to password protect folders he has shared over the network. By default XP uses simple file sharing to share files over the network, this has no permissions and no passwords. XP Home uses simple file sharing ONLY, whereas in Pro it can be disabled like this and sharing will work almost exactly like in 2k. Yes, I think this is retarded too and seems like quite the security risk in Home unless there's something I'm missing.
