How do I access our company server?

The guy who took care of our tech stuff is gone.. all he left me was a password to access our server via the Windows remote thing. It's a server here in the office that all our files are stored on, etc. How do I get into it via the remote stuff - where is that software located? Thanks!

I predict all files lost and your organization tanking in 3...2...

Start-->All Programs-->Accessories=>Remote Desktop Connection

You'll need either the network name or ip address, and a username for login.

Start > Programs > Accessories > Remote Desktop. Suggest you either make a desktop or quick launch shortcut.

To connect to the server, assuming the proper DNS record exists all you need to do is type the host name of the server. If it's called yourofficefs, type in yourofficefs and hit connect. It will open a remote desktop window asking for the username and password you were given.

Additional questions can be sent my way via PM. If necessary I work on a contractual basis to resolve many such instances as these remotely, up to and including reconfiguration of Linux and CISCO hardware and software firewalls, Windows/Linux DNS and DHCP configurations, and Exchange 2003/2007. I'll happily answer any questions you may have, though I cannot guarantee immediate replies at all times during the day.

Ok, I connected via Remote Desktop, but encountered a big problem.. the Windows start-up screen asks for username/password. And the guy is ignoring my emails. ****. Please help.

One word removed, tryin' to keep it cleaner in the tech sections :beer:

The dude is gone, as in, he doesn't work there anymore? Or is he just on vacation? What version of Windows does the server run?

Shouldn't there be some documentation?

There certainly should be, yeah. When I left my I.T. job, I left enough documentation to fill two DVDs. I'm still wishing I had kept a copy of my troubleshooting flowchart for the Merlin Legend... that was a work of art, if I do say so myself 🙂

He's gone permanently and didn't leave any docs or a password for the server. We have a very small office, and this is just a guy who was working here that happened to help out with IT stuff, not an actual tech. The server is right here next to me - it's a simple XP box and running fine (we all share files off of it), it's just that I need to get into it to update some settings for the online backup. The only files accessible to me now (from another networked computer) is the shared directory with all our stuff in it. So how do I get in?

Oh, ok. Get everyone to save their files, then restart the server box in Safe Mode. Now there should be an account named Administrator available (hit CTRL ALT DEL twice and type the username if necessary), and its password is blank by default. Once logged onto that account, you can change the password for the "regular" Admin-level account that you're locked out of.

If you use a different account to change that password in this fashion, read the warning that comes up when you're changing the password. It means business.
