How do heatpipes work?

Kind of a dumb/pointless question, but I was wondering exactly how do heatpipes work? Is the only agent used to transfer heat air, or is there some other material within the pipes that assists in the heat transfer? I have been looking into getting an xp-90 for my new system and this question popped into my head. Thought maybe someone on this forum could enlighten me

LOL! Anyone watch Late Night with Conan O'Brien? All I could think of when I read the secrets revealed thing was the skit they do on there. *Whispering voice* "Heatpipe... secrets."

Seriously though, thanks for the links. Very helpful since I was too slow to think to use google myself. BTW anyone ever heard of a sink that uses heatpipes failing. By that I mean the working fluid somehow leaked out causing the sink to no longer operate as it is supposed to?

No I've never heard of a heatpipe leaking before. You're safe with the XP90, great, reliable HS.

Heatpipes wlll last virtually forever. MTBF can be 2.5 million years.
