How do Germans feel about D-Day?

Well, I really don't care.....just like I don't care how the Japanese feel about VJ Day or the days the A-bombs were dropped.....they brought it on themselves and now they must endure the memories, embarassment, shame, or whatever other emotions they go through. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. You reap what you sow.

How do Americans feel about slavery? Or perhaps segregation and racism towards blacks?

I don't feel bad about either one....I was not involved in slavery, nor was my family, and I have never done anything bad/mean to a black person in my life so I have nothing to feel bad about.

Yes, and all policy's regarding the Native Americans for that matter.

True that!

I bet the average german feels the same way.

Before you go into how the banned the swastika, think about how a guy in a Klansman costume would be recieved in America.

And so can you logically deduce that the majority of the German population under the age of 65 feels the same way?

With each passing generation, there is less and less guilt and rightly so. Too often, Americans love to continue to point the finger and label the Germans as Nazis, but especially since 1989, it's a whole new country. A county that prides itself on pacifism as their latest foreign policies show.

I think modern German opinion is best reflected through Schroeder, who recently said that Germans are thankful as well for having been liberated from their own corruption.

Don't forget, the country that provides the most aid to Israel after the US is Germany.

Yup, me too. And I would imagine most historically knowledgeable inhabitants of any country would be any different.

I am disgusted by all of the above. It makes me sick that as little as 40 years ago there were laws excluding blacks.

Sure, and why shouldn't they because they did nothing that contributed to WWII. Like I said, I don't care how they feel. If they feel bad it is their problem and their cross to bear whether they are actually responsible or not. I personally think people beat themselves and their countries up way too much over things that happened generations ago when what was considerered acceptable was different. Times change and people need to move on.

Ironically, it's also harder to get a copy of Mein Kampf in Israel than in Germany.

Ironic? Wouldn't it be logical to assume that more copies are still in Germany than anywhere else?

guys, a lot of german people are happy about d-day so they can be freed of hitler's reign. a lot of high-up officials in the third reich actually plotted many times to kill hitler. because they know that either they get rid of hitler and surrender to the allies, or be overrun by russians. and hell, hitler was ready to pick whoever gets into berlin first.

yeah...i had to read that one a couple times too.... it makes sense that its easier to get mein kampf anywhere but israel therefore its NOT ironic.

im sure a fundamentally jewish state wouldnt be oh so happy with the writings of hitler. when hitler was in power in germany, i would think that he (being the self serving egomaniac he was) pumped out tons of his own book and that there are probably i pile of them left over from that era (im not sure this is a fact so correct me, not flame me, if im wrong). plus the fact that its originally in german and it was essentially hitlers message to the german people would corroborate that you would find more mein kampfs in germany.

im not israeli, but i would imagine that if you lived in israel, having mein kampf sitting on your coffee table isnt the brightest idea. selling that book in an israeli bookstore might also be asking for, at very least, an a$$ kicking.

I went to high school in the South.

A black guy called me a "beloved patriot" once. It's inaccurate. I'm only half beloved patriot.

Ignorance isn't race specific.

My former German GF tells me there's a lot of shame that lingers with the German people as a whole. I'm sure it'll fade as time passes.

well not quite the same. we are a nation of immigrants, and the slavery thing happened way way back. germans in general have a much more direct and recent link to their past.

*goes back to killing germans on computer

Well I can assure that the book can not be found in an ordinary book-store in Israel, but there has been a translation into hebrew though it falls short next to the English translated version.

I cannot hold the Germans accountable for what their government did 60 years ago any more than I can hold myself personally responsible for the Japanese internments in the U.S. during WWII. I wasn't around and most Germans weren't either or they were very small children.

The vast majority of Germans feel it was a shameful time and are happy to move on to a new era of peace and prosperity with their former enemies. Of course there are some diehard skinheads around as well as staunch Nazis that are still alive but they are slowly dying off.
