I read (on cnn.com or microsoft.com i think)it will use the same driver model as Win2k, since XP is really NT 5.1. In light of that i would expect most games to perform similarly to how they do in Win2k.
I think M$ is finally commiting to a SINGLE kernel.
This means that gaming people can no longer claim that the NT kernel is not designed for gaming, which is one of the stupidest excuses not to support a game on a more stable platform as I have ever heard. Do they think Windows 9x WAS designed for gaming???
I say that this is a great move for the gaming industry; maybe we'll start to see fewer BSODs!
Yeah. WinXP will work the same as 2000, but since it'll be the new consumer standard the game developers are going to have to write their new games to be 2000/XP friendly.
Seeing that you have 256mb of ram... I would think that gaming performance under w2k would be smooth!! I thought it was bad because I only had 128mb's worth... Maybe not.
My performance loss in games was very minimal moving from Win98SE to Win2000....I have a lot of RAM though (384MB) so maybe that's it....not sure what to tell you..but XP is pretty much the same OS as Win2000, so performance will be similar...in my case that's very good.
Check around....NVidia's Win2k drivers perform even better than their Win9x drivers in some cases....I don't think that consolidating to NT5.x is a bad move for anybody....
Well I have to admin you are right. With the newest Detonator Drivers, Via 4 in 1 drivers, and Service Pack 1. I received better performance than before. Now it is almost neck and neck with my Win98SE scores. I might switch to playing games on Win2k because the awesome memory management.
