How do DVD burners work?

Dont you need 2 dvd or cd drivers to burn a DVD?

Or am I taking the word dvd burner out of context?

Wouldnt you need 1 drive to insert the actual movie and another to insert the blank dvd?

You can copy to the harddrive and then copy that to the blank disc.

With Nero or something similar, this is all automatic. Just put the original in the drive and then tell it to copy. It will have you insert a blank disc when it has the original copied to the drive.

(This would work if you have unprotected data on a single layer DVD)

If you have like a retail DVD movie, you need to do more.

What do you have to do if you have a retail dvd?

Is there such thing as a single drive that burns DVD's and CD's?

I want both functions, or do I need to buy 2 DVD's?

Does burning music to a CD work the same way?

A retail DVD is usually dual layer and wont fit unless you get a dual layer disc.

If you get something like DVDshrink (free), you can cut out extras, alternate soundtracks, etc.
It will shrink it down to a size you can fit on a single layer disc.

I think all DVD burners will do CDs too.

Have you never had a CD burner before?

I have a CD burner on my current computer, I just want to make sure when I buy
a DVD burner that it can do everything, including burning cd's.

I was originally gonna buy a dvd burner and a cd burner but Im not sure if I still need to do this?

The only drive I have in my computer is an NEC 3520 and I burn DVDs, CDs, and can backup movies.

Nah. Just get whatever the newest Lite-On or NEC DVD burner model is.
