I am going to format my computer. Is there a way to back up my ZUNE software (ie. downloaded/paid songs with ZUNE pass)? Or will those be redownloaded when installing it agian?

Just backup your entire music folder. (check the library locations in your settings).

When you reinstall, re-add that folder to your library and login to zunepass, the software will iterate through the files and renew the DRM licenses for each.

The <music>/Subcription folder contains only your zunepass content. Your "keep 10" and any purchased content should be in the main music folder above it. I know you can't re-download the "keep 10" tracks. I think you can re-download purchased tracks, but I wouldn't rely on it.

Not to derail, but do you only get to keep those 10 songs from each month if you continue paying for the service?

Nope....the keep 10 are truly yours to keep. When you're given your allotment each month, you get the option of using a song credit, or zune pass when you download songs. The song credits (as well as regular purchased content) are most often downloaded as mp3s at 256kbps or 320kbps.

Only the zunepass content (drm protected wma files at, iirc, 192kbps) will fail to play when the license ends.

Gotcha, that sounds good as I am leaning toward getting a WP7 when they drop.

I totally want a WP7, and the zunepass really is awesome. For example, using mixview to basically browse other related/similar artists, and be able to listen to the full songs instead of just 30 second previews, works really well.
