How do auto dimming mirrors work?

I love them. Got so used to them that whenever I drive a rental I feel blidned.

To answer OPs question, I believe there's some sort of liquid inside the mirrors that alters it's properties under bright light.

electrochromics

Pick one up here and take it apart.

Sounds like it has mirror with a piece of glass that you can change the transparency by appling electricty in front of it.

I have it in my Xterra and it is okay. It helps to get mirror dimmed darker in the bright days but it get annoyed at night time.

How manual dimming mirrors work: Text

I wish it still had a manual dimming flipswitch, though, because in the daytime it doesn't do much good when some asshat has misaligned headlights (or is driving a Saturn)

Hell, I just leave my mirror flipped to nightside all the time. There's enough reflection in the day to see what's going on, plus you don't have to deal with the embarassment of making eye contact with the person stopped behind you at the light.
