How disappointing will a Geforce 6200 be?

My gf4 4600 died a couple weeks ago and I've been looking for a cheap replacement for it. Right now I'm using a geforce 2 which works well enough but lacks DVI and is a bit slower than I'd like. Originally I was looking for something a little better than my 4600. After thinking about it a bit I realized my gaming days are pretty much over. The only game I play is CS: Source and even that only happens rarely. It's not really worth it to spend a lot of money on this system and a new system will cost more than I want to spend. I looked around a bit and found this a 6200 for 23 bucks AR. I can't seem to find any decent benchmarks on how this will run source. I'm just wondering how bad it's going to be and if there's any other cards I should look at instead. Thanks!

That'd be your best best for AGP at that price, unless you find someone with a used 9600/9700/9800 or 6600 who'd like to get rid of it super cheap.

I've heard it's possible to unlock some of them to 8 piplines, but it mostly seems like it was the older versions that could do it. There's a PNY that's 33 buck without a rebate that might be unlockable. I'm thinking of going for that one instead.

I think only the non turbo cache 6200's were unlockable. So unless anything has changed, you might have some luck with the linked card.

how about a 6600GT?

step up to a 6800GS/7600GT (yes newegg has the leadtek one in AGP) if you feel like you need more performance.

a 6200 will get you nowhere, trust me.

even a cheap fx5900 would do the job a hell of a lot better than a 6200.

How about 5900 vs an unlocked 6200?

Agree ..... you can find 9600XT's and 9800 Pro's pretty cheap on the For Sale Forums. There's nothing you can buy for under about $50 to $60 that will be worth a $hit.

Buy yourself a 9800 Pro or 6600GT off the FS/FT forum instead... either will be a lot faster
then your old 4600 was & should only cost a bit more... 6200'a are pretty crappy for gaming.

The nVidia Geforce 6200 is/ was multiple things, but in almost all cases, if it had an AGP edge connector, it is/ was pure crap. The PCI-e version came out with 128-Bit memory, and moderately speedy RAM. It shared cores with the 6600 plain, and was easily unlocked and overclocked. Even before tweaking, it was running very, very closely with the 6600 plain in games (both PCI-e). Apparently, it didn't sell well enough compared to the millions of FX 5200 and MX 4000 chips pouring out, so they castrated it seriously. With only 64 Bit memory, it was half as good as the original, and should've been renamed a "6002".

Then, they cut the onboard RAM, and gave it "Turbocache", which means it runs as slowly as an integrated video chip. It's really a poor Crackerjacks prize tin whistle of a toy now.

My friend has a 6200 MSI AGP card. He went from a Geforce 2 gts to one of those. He plays WoW, and quake 2. He is happy with it, and it only cost 50-60 bucks.

According to the specs involved, the GF2 card would have been able to play both of those, meaning that neither of the games named had very much in the way of an admittance threshold, and your friend is seriously lacking in quality discernment if he's pleased with that poor level of performance. .

If its a 64-bit AGP variant of the 6200 it is almost definately a 6200A which is the newer chip which does not have disabled pipes. The old 6200s were sometimes essentially 6600s with half the pipes disabled. Those were also 128 bit sometimes.

I've no idea why Gigabyte used the confusing misnomer "PCX", but:

"Gigabyte Geforce 5900 PCX is powered by the Nvidia Geforce PCX 5900 GPU using the new PCI-Express interface."

So that'd make it PCI-e, not "all" AGP.

Thanks everyone for the input. After looking at everything over and over and over and over again, I went with an evga 6600gt. I figure I'm not upgrading my PC anytime soon so I might as well get something that I can be happy with. Cheers!

You made the right choice, the 6600 GT is a good GPU! :)
