How difficult would this be?

As some of you know, they are remastering the original Star Trek series, and adding in some new special effects. Nothing like Greedo shooting first in Star Wars, but more like adding in extra shots of the Enterprise orbiting planets (since the producers said there were less than five shots total that they kept using when they originally made the series), though in some cases they did a major overhaul like in the episode The Doomsday Machine, where they inserted a new and improved battle-damaged U.S.S. Constellation, as well as a reworked planet eater.

What I was wondering about, would it be possible for them to have both versions on a disc and have a menu option to choose whether you want to watch the original remastered version or one with the enhanced special effects? Basically just flipping between the regular or enhanced scenes depending on which option you chose? The timing wouldn't be a problem, as they either overlayed the special effects onto exisiting shots, or cut them so they were the same duration as the original footage. Could they make a combined version, or would they have to have the full episode of each version on the disc? If they could do a hybrid, it would take less overall space than having both versions on the disc.

I would hate for the enhanced versions to be the only ones available on DVD in the future.

Techincally: easy as pie
Will they? Who knows. Due to space constraints etc it all depends on how many disks they want the set to span
several fan-edits of Star Wars have been done just like this.
Then again its Star Trek so who cares 😛
I KID I KID!

2 sided DVD version would be easier to do. One side for the "original" version and the flip side for the "enhanced" version.

Perhaps the blu-ray versions will have the new versions in HD and "classic" version in 480i. Dual-layer discs have 50 GB of space so 41 for new + 9 for old.

Watched the re-made "Doomsday Machine" and was impressed with how it turned out. What sucked was the fact
that a lot of dialog was cut to make room for ads. The entire sequence with Spock and Decker (vulcans never bluff)
was chopped out. I know it's only TV but it still bugs me..

They've done that on other Star Trek series too. SpikeTV chopped bits out of some DS9 episodes.

Parts will even get removed from the theater-to-video cut. In Star Trek: Generations, in the theater, as the Enterprise was about to be destroyed by a shock wave, Troi said "This isn't right!" which was also in the book. In the home video version, that scene is gone.

That would really suck if you PAID for a movie or TV show and they STILL chopped out parts,
what's the point of buying any more DVD's by paramount or anybody else if that's gonna happen..

True. But given that neither George "Greedo shot first" Lucas nor Steven "walkie-talkies" Spielberg is in charge of the project, the odds are good that they won't.

They remaster the original episode in its entirety from what I have read, so they could have it both with and without the effects.

Gotta love The Doomsday Machine. A giant glowing cigar that eats planets. The special effects in ST TOS were laughable.

Yea, they used a wind sock dipped in paper mache and still went over budget for special effects..

The planet killer itself was created from a design by Greg Jein and consisted of a conical form covered with tin foil and photographed with special lighting to give it an alien texture. The inner core was a slow-motion matte overlay of a welding arc. Fans have dubbed the planet killer "The Great Space Cannoli".

gotta love that they shot it on film🙂

Yeah, I have a few pieces from the cutting room floor back when they they were making the series. Got them for cheap at an auction.

heh yea, makes me sad they didn't shoot the next generation in film. next generation on dvd looks soft .like the old video it is. no restoration really possible like with the original series. sometimes technology is a step back i guess.

With a weapon so powerful that it could slice up planets, yet it has trouble destroying a Constitution-class starship. Gotta love it. 😀
