How difficult/What are the dangers in unlocking my Athlon 1.1Ghz?

The reason being that I can get it almost completely stable at 1210Mhz (11X110) and I was wondering how difficult it is to do the mechanical pencil trick? Also, do you think this would garner me better OCing results?

dont want to pour water on your fire, but aren't you asking a rather basic question for someone who wants to overclock an expensive cpu?

a combo of FSB and multiplier overclocking yields the best results....

as far as unlocking the chip... it's very very very simple... just get a sharp pencil and cross the bridges.... viola! you got an unlocked chip... if it doesn't work... erase the graphite and start over:)

It's really not dangerous. Getting the bridges crossed improperly will result in an erratic unlock (certain multipliers will work, but most wont). It shouldn't harm your CPU at all, and is fairly simple if you have steady hands. You can always try it again.

It will most definitely give you better results.

I am planning on building a system in the future, and i was wondering do you have to unlock the processor still if you are going to overclock using FSB and multiplier, or do you only have to use the bios? thanks

One more thing to be carful is the heat given off! Too hot and you will hvae a melt down! Just keep an eye out for the temp! But pencil trick is easy to do, only hard thing is to have a steady hand!

Good Luck,

SKY.

Thanks for all the replies.

<edit>I'll have to pop the Taisol off the CPU. Is this difficult? And is there any thermal compound that would be recommended for when I put it back together?</edit>

Squirrel man- changing the multiplier in BIOS will have no effect if your processer is locked.

squirrelman....in regards to your question. You have to unlock the chip before you can increase the multiplier. As far as the FSB is concerned, I'm pretty sure you will get no increase unless you unlock in this situation as well... Not too sure about the FSB part, but for the multiplier you will not achieve any OC without unlocking the chip.

Thanks for the help, i had figured that was the case. Unlocking it looks pretty easy so i am not too worried about that. Thanks again.

A locked cpu will always o/c with the fsb. Look at intel cpu's they are all locked and can o/c via FSB.

Not as dangerous and a lot easier than unlocking your girlfirends chastity belt. Tee Hee
