Nissan Quest 2000.

looks like the O2 sensor is failing. How difficult is it ?
I do have the Haynes manual but would like some live feedback.

Also the only tools i'd need are a voltmeter and ratchet set ?

Depends which one it is. My old 1.6l Sentra had a front and a 'rear' (exhaust) O2 sensor. The front was easy as PIE to replace, the rear was a bit more difficult. How do you know it's an O2 sensor? Have you run the OBDII scanner at Autozone or some place similar?

actually I purchased an ODBII scanner waiting for delivery.

but it's at the mechanic right now and he did a tune up and timing belt change. $180 :(

he told my dad that it's the o2 sensor, but I will find out definitely when I pick up the car in about 15 min.
Total price he wanted is $360 which I think is pretty high.

O2 is about $80. Dude, $180 for timing belt is CHEAP. Be happy:) Uhm, get a crow's foot style wrench and a breaker bar. It'll make it much easier.

have you done the o2 sensor ?

he wants 360 for both replaced.

I think that's way too expensive.
What's the average going rate ?

$180 for the timing belt? wow thats cheap. did it include the water pump and all new running/accesory (serpentine) belts? Thermostat? Timing belt tensioner? $180 for parts sounds reasonable, but for parrts and labor, thats a very good price. Tune-up too, thats spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor. You got one heckuva deal at $180 for a timing belt and a tuneup.

Autozone will let you borrow one for free if you don't want to buy it.

I dont mind purchasing stuff for the car as i hear it's only like 7-10 bucks.
what is the difficulty level ?
Can i just splice the old wiring into the new sensor ?

I did all 4 of them in my Isuzu using nothing but a 22mm open end wrench.

Buy the OEM sensors from the dealership though, they come with the correct wiring harness and plug right in. Took me about 1/2 hour to do all 4. It's a pretty easy job.

I say on a scale of 1-10, I say 3. Worse part will most likely be getting under the car or finding the sensor. I suggest you to buy one that works for your car instead of getting a "universial" one. The ones made for your car have the harness and plug already done, just as easy as changing a light bulb.

I cannot confirm this, but I was told that the universial o2's might interfere with your engine computer.

Yeah, AFAIK, if you buy an OEM snesor, the wiring harness will basically just plug into the wires from the car.

Bosch i found for 40 but I want to go OEM.

How do I know which is OEM.
I checked online and the only thing i'm able to pull up is Bosch and Denso.

Also how difficult is it to pull the O2 Sensor off ?

Not if you want an OEM one. Why do you keep asking the same question? Figure out how much OEM ones cost, add in approximately 1-2 hours of your mechanic's labor charges, and figure out yourself if it's a good price or not.

for one sensor, no, for two, maybe, but thats only if you're using overprice dealer OE parts.

it seems BOSCH or denso are the only sensors i see for the nissan quest as well. can't go wrong with either of them, both bosch and denso are OEM for O2 sensor for a lot of car makes.

I was asking for the going mechanic prices for an 02 sensor replacement.
The hell you mean why am I asking the same question.
Noone answered whether 360 was reasonable or not. :p

I don't mind splicing if i have to but I owuld rather do a plug and play sort.

Okay. Figure out how much a Bosch sensor costs, or an OEM one if you're going to take it to a dealer. Then, add in your mechanics standard per-hour labor charge, for approximately 1.5 hours. If that is less than $360, you're getting ripped off. If it's about $360, then your mechanic is being truthful.

Call the Nissan dealership parts department.

I bought 4 O2 sensors from Isuzu for around $40 each.

They screw into your exhaust system at various points before and after the catalytic converter. You will probably need to get under your vehicle to do this. It isn't difficult though. I don't know how much the parts cost for the Quest, you'll have to call your local dealership to find out. Then you can decide whether it's worth it for you to do it yourself. I think my local mechanic quoted me $180 for him to replace the one sensor that failed. It cost me less to replace all 4 myself.

i'd do the plug and play route, because to splice properly, you should idealy solder the wires together and then heatshrink the joint. the cost of a solder iron and heatshrink may just add up to the cost of the pre-terminated one, unless you have stuff to do that already.
