How difficult is installing a Turbo Kit ?

isekii

Lifer
I'm seriously considering installing a Turbo Kit on my car.

It comes with everything necessary to have it running.

It'll be going on an IS300.

In general, is it difficult ? or is it more of a Bolt on type of install with more details ?

I won't be doing the install all by myself and I'll have a lil help, but does it sound impossible ?

just nab the button off an old AT case wrap the wire leads around the battery mounts and youre money 🙂

I believe there might have been some pretty major differences between your motor and the 2jz-te involving compression and timing, not just the obvious piping and fuel delivery stuff. I know there is a lot of work involved in converting it's predecessor (the 7MGE) to a 7MGTE aside from just the turbo, intercooler, etc. Most guys charge 2 grand on top of parts to do it fully.

Also in the Supra they used a different clutch and different sized exhaust piping in addition to all the motor stuff. I have a spare intercooler laying around from an MKIII if you wanna buy it off me though. 😉

I have a 2JZ-GE 🙂 not the 2JZ-TE whatever that is.

Stage 1

It's suppose to be a bolt on type of install I believe.
I dont mind putting in the time as I enjoy working on the car.

It'll occur prolly around spring break. I'm currently looking at. If not it will be an early summer type project.

the te was the TT version of your motor they put in the Supra. Besides the turbo itself you are going to have to change the exhaust manifold, the throttle body, the fuel chip, all the intake piping, a bunch of vacuum stuff, etc. It's not just bolting on one part. 😀 (in other words it's a lot of work)

You mean the 2JZ-GTE. Yes I know it's not bolting on just one part 😉
The Stage 1 doesn't require a FMIC.

What Robin's gay lover said ^ 😉

You also have to mess with your timing, adjusting your A/F ratios, etc in addition with what he said. There is a lot that can go wrong. Also the cold weather has a drastic affect on power adders as well.

2JZ-GTE was the Turbo version while the NA version was 2JZ-GE.

Turboing NA Supras (roughly the same engine as yours) is pretty popular now and has recently gotten pretty inexpensive. How much is the turbo kit you're considering and what does it come with?

Edit: Holy jesus $6000 is expensive as hell.

Yes I understand the A/F rations, I'll get those done professionally and get it adjusted on a Dyno.
But means of a successful install and such.

It shouldn't be too difficult right ?

Something like a 2 week job ? with couple people working on it ?

I'm going to be helping some friends turbo a GS-R in about 2 weeks. The biggest PITA is probably going to be welding the oil pan for a turbo oil return line. Some of the front bumper support is going to need to be hacked away to fit the intercooler too.

EDIT: 2 weeks is a lot of time, my friends and I are hoping to do a complete install in 2 weekends tops, minus dyno tuning it.

I know, I missed the G because I'm not that gansta. 😀 I have a 7m-gte in my car and my buddy did a conversion from the 7mge before and it was very involved. The two motors had a different compression ratio, I'm not sure if that is the case for the 2jz series or not.

It's listed onthe website.
I"m considering a Stage 1. Nothing crazy. Something that'll keep it fun. It's 5995 listed but I'm sure i can negotiate that down.

For 6 large couldn't you just find a crate 2jz-gte? That seems like it would be easier than a conversion. That is a lot of money for basically a jury rigged solution.

I have to go to class right now, or else I'd fill you in with more info. But to see what the Supra guys are doing, check out this web site. You can piece together a turbo kit for a lot less than $6000. Also, yeah, the compression ratio is higher on the NA engine. A lot of people have used thicker headgaskets to lower the compression though. The headgasket from the 2JZ-GTE would fit in the NA.

Problem is electronics 🙁

I would be happy to just swap in the 2JZ-GTE. Know anyone that would swap in that engine+ tranny to my car for 6 large ?

Should take a weekend at most if you or your friend has any idea what they're doing.

Hrmm...$5995 is quite a bit for a turbo kit, although this company seems more like a custom one by one maker than a mass manufacturer like greddy.

If it were me, I'd rather spend $6000 on suspension, chassis and wheel upgrades (though HRE wheels could cost $6000 alone), that way you can fully utilize the power you car currently makes, and if you decide you need more power, then get a turbo/super.

It shouldn't be too hard to install, but be prepared to take out at least a weekend to put it in, especially if you don't have a lift handy. I also recommend getting a factory service manual if you are going to be taking apart that much stuff; maybe the instructions would suffice, but I doubt it will include all the torque values.

I hear the Supercharger is a more difficult install for my car 🙁
I wouldn't mind a super charger either. But Turbo has more upgrade capabilities no ?

You'd still have to do the work. 😀 I never thought about lowering the compression by changing out the HG, but that is a decent amount of work too. A decent steel one for that motor will still run your 3 or 4 hundred. Don't break anything. 😉

Yeah but you can have boost ALL the time. 🙂

you can't do it yourself... lets just put it that way..

well.... i guess you COULD... but i think the chances are slim.

if you are getting help, it better be professional 😛
