I enjoyed that. Never thought too much about it before, and this is a very clever solution to a somewhat subtle engineering challenge.

Nicely done. I saw either that one, or one very similar to it when I was a first-year apprentice studying mechanics. Over the years, I've rebuilt more differentials than I'd like to count...but the mechanics of them has always amazed me...so complex...yet so simple.

Yep spider gears FTW.

Good way to blow them up is to neutral drop your car. Had to rebuild a diff in a 944 when someone did a ND and blew their gears up.

Other components are likely to fail before the diff if you do that. The quickest way to kill a diff (in particular the spider gears) is to do a single-spinner burnout. I've done three of my own in that way. First time the LSD failed and caused the single spin, other times I was too poor to replace with an LSD. Man I was a stupid teenager.

Yup, when you do a single tire fire one wheel is going 0 and the other at double the speedometer. The spider gears are meant to handle minor differences in speeds, not 120MPH differences. :)
