How did your retirement portfolio do in 2009?

The Dow is up 18.8% in 2009. Nasdaq is up 44%
I'm up 30%.

Portfolio
Bonds = 20%
Total Market = 40%
Small cap value 5% (Small cap growth beat value by 13%.. Doh!)
Large cap value = 5% (dropping this for Real estate for 2010)
Healthcare = 5%
International = 25% (yeah Emerging Markets up 85%! but it's just a portion of Intl)

of course, when you factor in last year, it's probably still like - 30%, but lets just ignore last year and be happy.

33.2%. Still about $37,000 below my peak in 2007...and that's including over 2 years worth of 15 to 20% (+ 3.5% company match) contributions on top during that 2+ year stretch. Goes to show just how bad the end of 2007, all of 2008 and part of 2009 were.

i got somewhat lucky. i dumped $5k for Roth 2008 in March 2009, the low point of the Market crash. But it was all in european and Japan Indexes. 20/20 hindsight... should have done Nasdaq QQQQ.

My 401k funds are equal to where there were last year at this time. However, now that they are equal and the market appears to be leveling off, I exited from the stock and bond funds this week to place my cash in a money market fund. I expect to try to time the bottom of the approaching dip in the market and buy into the stock funds again in the first two weeks of March.
