For those that keep a checkbook how did you learn to fill it out? Did you figure it out by yourself or did someone teach you?

LOL- aren't those the things old people use to hold up checkout lanes?

are you talking about filling out the actual check? i don't think anyone ever taught me that, but i was young back when checks were used a lot still and i watched my mom and dad fill them out pretty regularly so i guess i learned by osmosis.

oh sorry, i gave an actual response.

what i meant was...

This seems about right. I don't remember specifically learning. I hate checks. They're an archaic form of payment, that leaves questions as to whether you really got paid or not. Cash, or GTFO.

I guess I learned in school, maybe junior high or 5/6th grade maybe? Though I did see my mom doing it before; I'm sure I would've figured it out. ;-)

I've never used a checkbook, online banking has all of your transaction details so I guess I've never seen a need for one :)

they used to teach this stuff in school but check use is on the decline

Maybe in Home Economics (or whatever politically correct name Housewife Training goes by now) but they certainly didn't teach this to us college bound kids in the sixties. My father gave me "the talk" when I was a teen and set up my first checking account. It's not rocket science, just consistently follow a system and you'll be OK.

I've never seen a cheque in my life, I've seen it in old donald duck stories though, must be something from another era.

My checkbook basically reads:

Daycare
Daycare
Daycare
Daycare
...

It's the only check I write every month. Other than that I have been cutting checks for a remodel.

As for filling out the register? Who does that anymore?

No you don't.
You do it because you are scared of change.

You know how I know you're getting old? :hmm:

im 31 and no i dont fear change 99% of the time i just swipe a card, hell i dont even use cash anymore. but i keep a check in my wallet at all times so i can mess with people who think they are super important and are assholes in the checkout line, no ones time is more important than mine and im never in a hurry

Whats bullshit is that I have to write a check for my electric and water bill unless I give the company permission to auto debit my account. Because they do not want to setup a proper online bill paying system. Basically you snail mail them a check, they deposit it and don't have to pay for a website development or credit card fees. So they can make more profit.

The same thing goes, with my roommate, to get the share of the bills its easier to write a check. Otherwise, he's not going to give me 126.73 in cash, or whatever. There are some uses of checks still. Or maybe as a wedding gift, or things of that nature.

I had seen enough checks before I had my own account that I knew how to write one.

For the check register, I read the instructions that were printed on the first page of the register.
