Just wondering. I got really lucky and found my current job through an obscure bronx job board. Before that, I always found work through friends.

I have never previously found a job on my own, and am currently looking for a 2nd job so that I can save up a few thousand to buy a house. I would just like to get a few ideas on how people ended up at their current jobs.

I also feel that location might matter on how people find work. For example, from what I gather, it is easier to walk into a place in New Jersey and get work easily, than it would be in New York City.

When I was looking for work in NY, most places I went to, told me to apply online on their website, that they do not accept walk-in applications. In New Jersey, they were more than happy to let me fill out an application.

How about you guys..?

networking is the key.

your friend puts in a good word for you which puts you in the same group as the more qualified candidates.

just dont screw over your friend after u get the job by being a dumbass at work. it'll get you fired and make him look bad.

I hired myself. The interview consisted of playing Xbox 360 in my underwear. I aced it.

Excellent!

I am a consultant myself (also of about 3 years), and I wouldn't mind doing the same thing! :) Got my job through a career fair.

My current job (I've been here over 7 years now) came about without my seeking it.
I "retired" in '99, having the required number of credits and 20 years with the union, and totally fed up with the whole industry. Took a "withdraw" card rather than signing up for retirement pay, as I didn't want to start receiving reduced benefits (Full benefits at age 55!).

I swore I would never go back to Construction work. However, my current employer called me a few months later, said he had heard some good things about me, and asked if I was interested in going to work for him. I flat refused. He called back a few days later and asked if I would spare him a few minutes and hear him out, OK, no problem. Long story short, he "made me an offer I couldn't refuse"! (They have never told me how they got my name and phone number, though!)

I now make considerably more money, better benefits than when I was in the Union, plus, paid holidays, vacation, and Expense account which I never received while in the Union.

An HR person e-mailed my professor who is the department chair looking for CS people. I sent her my resume, was interviewed, and hired.

My brother was in the mall shopping for a graduation gift for me. He ran into someone I knew from high school and when the guy found out I had graduated, he told my bro to tell me to send in a resume. I knew absolutely nothing about my job before I started working here. I had been working in a factory that summer making good money as a student and they were going to offer me a full-time spot there, but I took the pay cut to get out of that environment and try out office work. 7 1/2 years later I am positive that I made the right decision as I have done very well in this job so far.

My current boss found my resume on Monster or Careerbuilder. Went for two interviews, got offered the job, took it. My past two jobs were off of some resume site. Very strange.
