How did you get your current job?

Just wondering. I got really lucky and found my current job through an obscure bronx job board. Before that, I always found work through friends.

I have never previously found a job on my own, and am currently looking for a 2nd job so that I can save up a few thousand to buy a house. I would just like to get a few ideas on how people ended up at their current jobs.

I also feel that location might matter on how people find work. For example, from what I gather, it is easier to walk into a place in New Jersey and get work easily, than it would be in New York City.

When I was looking for work in NY, most places I went to, told me to apply online on their website, that they do not accept walk-in applications. In New Jersey, they were more than happy to let me fill out an application.

How about you guys..?

Knowing people is extremely important.

I've always believed this is the best way to land a job myself. I am kinda happy I no longer work with my friends though.

Brother-in-law talked me into interviewing for a recently opened position, working the shift after him.

Put resume up on Monster, had many helpdesk jobs beating down my door (I turned them all down just because I spent 2 years on a helpdesk in college doesn't mean I want to do it for the rest of my life). I waited and got a contractor job programming for a company. By the end of it they decided they couldn't let me go and offered me a job.

I got mine through a church contact. Right now I'm looking for another one, through job postings, and it's pretty damn competitive. I get interviews for less than half the jobs I apply for (which are all entry level).

From Michigan Works online job postings. It ended up being right here where I'm living.

I'm self-employed, but at this point in my career 90% of my leads are through existing clients or past colleagues. Your professional network is of profound importance, and the greater the diversity (both in terms of geography, professional level and industry) the more opportunities you will have.

I haven't applied for a job in about 8 years, and even then I never went through a normal application.

Friend of mine worked with the person that I replaced at my company (she was doing contract labor for them, and they needed someone who could work full time.) He recommended me to her, and she recommended me to the company.

that blows. I was working for an IBEW shop as an IUOE operator, but I quit that job and went back to my old one. Riding around with another guy who could not keep his mouth shut, TMI, TMI:p

Were they legit jobs, or recruiters breathing down your neck. A friend of mine is a so-called recruiter, and they find jobs for less than 1% of their applicants from what he told me. They make most of their money by reselling their information.

Coworker in a job I've had for a little while (which paid crap) asked if I "knew anything about computers" because her dad was looking for people for his IT company. I said yes and her father met me down there the next day I was in and bam, I had a job that paid nearly 2.5 times what I was making at the original place doing what I love to do.

I was lured to a particular company in the last year of my Engineering program in University. I was pretty much on their payroll on a part time basis for the last 2 years of my schooling.

I was a consultant for three years and quit to start my own company.

I hired myself. The interview consisted of playing Xbox 360 in my underwear. I aced it.

Through career services @ school. I got lots of great interviews thru them. They will even let alums post their resume there. I found my current position, with the same company, by knowing someone.
