I used AT for hardware advice for a while... when I had more specific questions I joined the forum to ask them after lurking for a bit.

I came here when some other forum went belly up. can't remember the name though. something about gamer, or gamers or something. This was back in 1999

Someone on the hardocp forums mentioned it...so I came here. They deleted their off-topic and P&N sections, so I have stayed here and only go back there for hot deals.

I was taking a A+ cert class and we had a guest speaker who mentioned the site so I came here for advise on building my first computer. Been off and on ever since.

USENET, where it really is where it's at.

'96, I read Anandtech for almost a year and then was shocked when Anand posted he was going for his driving test.

I found AT when I was shopping for a replacement for my 'ol 486. I was reading newsgroups and found Tom's Hardware and Anandtech. Both sites were invaluable resources, but AT was more interesting to me because it was US-based and it was all written by a smart 16 year old kid (Anand!) who really understood PCs, and obviously loved to tinker with them.

Thanks to AT, I ended up with the famous Abit BH6 + Celeron 300 @ 450. Later got a 566 + slotket and ran that sucker at 850, but I still ran that BH6 until last spring (when the MB finally died due to some dried/burst electrolytics).

I also suggested the same BH6 + Celeron 300 to a dude at work who was building his first system to play games on. He was happy as hell when it booted up at 450, and thanked me for helping him get an extra $250 worth of performance for nothing more than the slightly higher cost of the BH6 over a different motherboard. (I wonder if that one is still running. . .)

my RA (siberiantiger) suggested this. I didn't believe it at first so I lurked for a while before coming out.

I wonder where he is now..
