I ask this because I'm currently a first year student majoring in IT - new media - and i learned that a lot of the grads that came out go into Flash design / website / database design stuff. I don't think im quite interested in it. (Don't really like flash, and i can't draw well like most new media students)

I don't really know what I want to do...and it bothers me cause it seems like im just wasting $$$ studying in something that I don't really have too much interest in for a job.

::confused::

I know Art History majors going to Law School.
I know a Philosophy major going to Med School.
I know a Computer Science major going to graduate school.

The majority of professionals go into careers completely unrelated to their major.

Took Automotive Repair classes in a tech school, because I was absolutely certain that I wanted to fix cars. After all, it was a blast!

Well, 10 years into my automotive career, I couldn't have been much more miserable. Had a friend talk me into interviewing at Intel and I couldn't be much happier. :D

Originally I wanted to be an electrical engineer. Then in high school I decided I wanted a more fundamental understanding of things, so I chose physics. Now it's several years later and I'm still kicking myself for that. :p

your degree does not dictate what you do in life. i wish more college students would realize this.

i have a political science degree. i don't work in politics, but i do work in the legal field. i might go to law school like the gazillions of other poli sci majors there, but there are tons of majors at law school - engineers, english majors, etc.

I loved playing with computers and troubleshooting, so I decided to go into the Network Admin field.

It's been 5 years, and I'm seriously considering getting out. It sucks.

I always wanted my own business. Studied business management in school, got employed into the field and worked for a few companies, now I have my own business.

My advice, follow your nature. Understand that you have to work in order to take care of yourself and figure out what type of work best fits what kind of things you like to do.

Well, I lost my job at the radio station I worked at in November, they paid me severance till Nov 30. The CGA accounting program's 2nd semester started December 1st. Voila! Only made sense.

I didn't really decide on banking - I sort of stumbled on it literally.

10 years ago I was biking around Beaverton, Oregon. A nearby hotel had a job fair for a bank. Of course everyone was dressed appropriately except for me (in shorts, Pearl Izumi gloves, Oakley FrogSkin shades, t-shirt and tennis shoes). Just for sh!ts and giggles, I applied for loan customer service. A few days later I received a call asking if I would like to interview? After the 30 minute interview they asked if I would do a drug test? I did it that same day and was hired instantly.

Fast forward 10 years and I'm still stuck, eventually I'd like to do something computer related.

I just started grad school in mechanical engineering (same as under grad). Im really doing it because i am getting paid to do so for doing a thesis and i dont want to find a job yet. I know what my ideal job would be (roller coaster design), but that is something that ill have to work to get to. so the plan is to get a job someplace that i may not necessarily like, work there for a bit, then see about getting into roller coaster design.

i am quite intrigued by photography but i am hesitant @ majoring in photography because it is quite hard to make a living with just a camera...yea...so i don't know...maybe ill just major in IT for now. (since its quite general) and see how things go...

Just stumbled into mine too.

My Dad got me hired into GM as a sweeper/janitor, then I took the apprenticeship test and was accepted into the apprenticeship program for diemaking.
