An ex-friend was using this forum. But I suppose not as much as I had initially thought.

While building my first computer, he was consulting this forum for advice & shared insight with me. I eventually signed up. Didn't care for not being able to upload my own avatar (to maintain my individual identity type thing?) So didn't stick around long.

After being banned from TechIMO, it was time I found a new computer-technical type forum to call home.
I like this place a lot more. TIMO was far too conservative for me.
Overnight they changed rules that it was ok to use the word "fuck", to being against the rules. Then weighed every time I used the word "fuck" the day they made it a no-no again, as enough reason to perma-ban me. I'm thinking it was point where they were just out to get me gone.
Whatever.
ATOT shits on that shit site any day, any way.

However their affiliate site thing - Reseller Ratings is an asset to any/all internet consumers.

Probably looking for an answer to something, found it, and stayed. I didn't set foot in OT until 2009. I used to just hang out around the technical subforums.

same. lurked technical forums for a few years for purchasing advice and problem solving.

finally registered for a problem that needed direct intervention.

...but it only took a few months after that to discover OT.

sigh. :(

I used AT forums time shifting ability to email myself a link to this thread back in '99. The mouse popping, plane on a conveyor, scroll inducing goodness was merely icing on the cake.

Actually this:
Introduced to this, and several other tech forums, by a real life friend.

But you left us hanging in The Garage. Did you ever figure out your parasitic draw problem?

It was either a tech problem or when I was looking for information before building my first computer. I used to go to Toms Hardware a lot but I found this forum to be more helpful. Only visited occasionally for a couple of years and just in the Hardware/Hot Deals section. Finally ventured into ATOT around 2008

All family-acquaintance type mechanics have flaked. There's only one other person I'm waiting on, but they wouldn't even know what to do/where to look if they can't find wiring schematics.
If nobody shows up this weekend, going to try charging battery enough to drive it to a nearby shop.

Started lurking this forum for advice on computer builds back around 2001 or so. Every time I upgraded or did a rebuild, I'd come back for advice and benchmarks on the latest and greatest, maybe some hot deals here and there... I didn't actually sign up until I started reading ATOT and felt like I had to get in on the action. What a mistake that turned out to be...

Coworker pointed me to the hot deals forum here. I lurked since 1999 (back when hot deals equaled HOT deals, not these lukewarm "oh hey, it's 5% off this weekend, I'll make a thread" deals. More like "hey, if I purchase this scanner, use this coupon, purchase these 6 items that are free after rebate, and use the $30 off 150 coupon, I'll end up making $18 by purchasing those items." Or "hey, if I purchase a desktop on this date, I get a rebate for this, and a rebate for that, and that, and that, and the educators rebate on this, and the educators rebate on that. Whoa, $2500 desktop for $200!" I finally made my own account at some point to post a comment about a hot deal or something. Didn't discover ATOT until some time later.

Hot deals back in 99 that led to dotcom crash. Back then we just weren't just saving money but actually made money as it was being thrown around. Remember ValueAmerica (sure we'll give you $100 credit in your new account for joining...wut? someone joins a bunch of times and selling those new $100 accounts on eBay? Nooooooo) And some crazy website that send you money just for the amount of time spent surfing on their site so someone came up with a program that automatically moves the mouse while logged in...brilliant!!! (yeah, much better ways to do that now)
Good times.
