I lurked a long time before I joined. Was researching my first computer build, also at Tom's too at that time.

Went to the main site from the computer newsgroups. Stayed there for like six months or a year, then discovered Hot Deals which I lurked for another six months or a year before I registered.

I figured Anand was college age kinda like Tom was then after I'd been going here for six months he posted in his blog he had on the front page that he was going for his driving test.

I joined this forum because Tom's hardware forum was damn boring and too strict. I never looked back.

Came here to look for info on buying a computer and spent most of my time lurking Video & Graphics and enjoying all the ridiculous arguments. I loved how so many of them also were P&N regulars.

Hot Deals brought me here but it took me several years before I ventured into OT. Now Hot Deals is dead to me.

Around the time I was looking to upgrade my Pentium 166mhz. I found out about all the Celeron 300@450 and 366@550 overclocks (and even bumped the 166mhz up to like 183mhz) and that seemed like the way to go for fast and cheap.

A real life friend told me about it to look for a used laptop for my girlfriend. still have that toughbook in a cabinet in the apt. It all went downhill from there.

Hot deals back in 99 that led to dotcom crash. Back then we just weren't just saving money but actually made money as it was being thrown around. Remember ValueAmerica (sure we'll give you $100 credit in your new account for joining...wut? someone joins a bunch of times and selling those new $100 accounts on eBay? Nooooooo) And some crazy website that send you money just for the amount of time spent surfing on their site so someone came up with a program that automatically moves the mouse while logged in...brilliant!!! (yeah, much better ways to do that now)
Good times.

WTF? This is probably one of the most unethical posts on the forums and a good reason why Hot Deals aren't so hot now.

Boyfriend at the time joined and posted a lot, so I wanted to read what he wrote (not in a paranoid gf type way, just genuinely interested). Joined the forums, the rest is history.

I wasn't asking how you were born.

Janas19 Why do you feel the need to pick on others. He was merely telling you how he came to find the AnandTech forums. I think you Enjoy setting people up to make fun of them. Just because you feel you are smarter then them doesn't make it the right thing to do. Even though you seldom find someone less intelligent than yourself. I think YOU Janas19 are insecure about your own intelligence, to the point where you have to attempt to bring down someone who is widely known to have a mental deficiency. Janas19 you should feel bad, because you are a bad person.

It was the internet wild west back then...yes. Many unethical thing happened then that would get shut down fast today by mods. And no, I did not participate if you're implying, so take it easy.

Sorry if I missed in the other replies if the name had been mentioned - and also am sorry that I can't remember the name of the site that many of us old-timers came from - it was an early site during the .com boom...

Now some filtered off to AT, some went to PC Abusers...

\rip Blade - Michael Lee Valley

*edit - ah, I believe the old site was called AGN - not the one you'd find today, but it was a precursor to AT....
