How did this contact get into my gmail account?

I have this person's email, a non gmail address, which i have in my contacts and have received and sent messages to in the past. Although i have never received any emails from him from his gmail account, for some reason his gmail account is listed in my contact list. How is that possible? I don't have him added in any social networks by the way.
 
He might've associated his non-gmail address to his gmail account in some way and now his gmail address is in your contacts.
