heres a little something that i thought would make a good thread for all you music fans.

How did that band get its name?

Better Than Ezra:
they were about to perform in a game show of some sort in st. louis. it was like the battle of the bands or someting. the band still had no name and they were going up next, right before Ezra. when the band was asked what their name was they said, "we dont know, but we are better than ezra." so thats how they got their name.

The only one that comes to mind is Duran Duran, who took their name from a character in "Barbarella." I was a big Duran Duran fan in the 80's. ;)

Depeche mode was named after a fashion magazine I believe. New Order was named as such b/c they were called Joy Division and the lead singer killed himself, so they were the new order, I believe.

Smashing Pumpkins

Most answers to this question are only semi-serious, as they've heard it way
too often. The March '93 fan club newsletter gave the following story:

"Gene Simmons came to us in a dream and said: 'Joe Strummer is a pumpkin,
drunken and smashed.'"

On Vieuphoria, they simply said "It's a joke." However, the most serious
answer comes from an interview with D'Arcy by the Washington Post(11/19/93):

"The name of the band is a stupid name, a dumb bad joke and a bad idea, OK?"
she says. "Billy named the band before there even was a band. He was like, 'I'm
gonna have a band and it's gonna be called this.' 'Smashing' is not a verb,
it's an adjective. It's not like we like to smash pumpkins or anything. And we
are not amused by pumpkin jokes anymore."

So, there you have it. "Smashing" is an adjective, not a verb (think British
here if you're still having trouble).

TOOL
"In a 1994 interview, Danny says that the band's name stands for how they want their music to be a tool to aid in understanding lachrymology, the science of crying as a therapy. But if you don't buy the whole lachrymology thing, there's always the obvious answer."

Tool was also the term that brownnosers were referred to at the singer's military academy prep school.

Soulfly

After Max broke up with Sepultura, he was part of the song Headup with the Deftones (which might have been about Max's late stepson Dana Wells). The chorus of the song is "Soulfly! Fly high! Soulfly! Fly free!" Max liked that and called his new band Soulfly.

Atleast that's what i've heard. I could be wrong.

Pearl Jam
Vedder's grandmother's name was Pearl and she was married to a Native American that influenced her cooking style. She had a recipe for preserves that included a Native American hallucinogenic substance, hence, Pearl Jam.

PINK FLOYD

"When you search for the begining of this band, then you'll find the year 1965. In that year a group of friends (Roger Waters, Rick Wright and Nick Mason) decided to make their own band. The name of the band was Sigma 6. They played some R&B songs. They played them good, but the success wasn't theirs yet."

"After that they played under names like:The T-Set, The Meggadeaths, The Architectural Abdabs, and The Screaming Abdads."

"In that year Waters brought his High School friend - Syd Barrett. It was him who gave them this name that we all know them by , Pink Floyd , after two American Blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council."

Do you really want to know how the butthole surfers got their name????

I dont personally ... The Gin Blossoms got their name from the term for the flush that alcoholics have on their face ...
