On Intels Ark page the Rocket Lake cpu has 20 PCI Express Lanes listed on the cpu and not the 500 series chipset.
I know for years the non Xeons i5 and i7 only had 16 lanes so how did they gain the 4 extra lanes.

Were some of those lanes previously reserved such that they were they, but not actually available?

Rocket Lake isn't the same old rehashed Skylake. Rocket Lake is a backported 10 nm chip which includes a new PCI configuration. They added 4 PCIe lanes and switched from PCIe 3.0 to PCIe 4.0.

Also chipset link is x8 wide instead x4(needs 500-series board). But link is still PCIe 3.0 so not all lanes are 4.0 like current desktop ryzens.
