Just curious if anybody knew any history behind their name.

    Thanks!

Open the door while you're moving & get sucked out.

Opening them while moving was suicide.

Ever hear of a suicide clutch?

Seriously? I wondered if it had anything to do with the mafia/gangsters. For some reason I associate gangsters with cars that have suicide doors. Dunno why.

I also wondered if it had anything to do with people dying from T-bone accidents. The lack of B piller hurting the integrity of the car and lots of fatalities.

Car doors that are hinged at the back of the door.

Because if someone wanted to jump from a moving car (to their death), they could not do so with typical doors that are hinged at the front - the moving air would push them back shut. However, with the hinges at the rear, when the door was opened, even a little, the air would force it all the way open and hold it open.

That's the same story I heard many years ago.

No, suicide doors opened the opposite way of conventional doors, they were hinged at the rear of the door rather than the front and when opening they would fold out towards the rear of the car. It's pretty common for idiots to open car doors without checking incoming traffic and cars passing closely can easily slam into the door that suddenly opens in front of them. With a normal door, no problem, the door is sheared off the car, but the mass of the door is in front of the person getting in or out of the car, so he/she is missed. With a suicide door the mass is behind the person getting in/out and if the door is struck by a passing car it slams shut violently. Anyone in the process of entering or exiting the car can be crushed very easily.
