Supposedly he is worth $36 billion. But his software is not really popular like Microsoft

Not 100% true. A lot of companies use Oracle databases.

Microsoft is dying, though they have a chance at a real comeback with Surface if it will be as stable as iOS (don't cross your fingers on that one).

You ask a lot of stupid questions.

Not popular like Microsoft? For pc operating systems and software, maybe.

For large databases and ERP systems, Microsoft can't compete.

Oracle has the most popular paid db on the planet, and has been for quite a while. Most big businesses use their products in one form or another.

Also, consulting services. You're thinking consumer market only, Oracle is business and enterprise level stuff.

licensing is ridiculous expensive.

Personally, I think many companies overpay. because we're seeing everyone upgrading to real time update monitoring systems that are millions of dollars more. And hardly any of these businesses actually do any business in real time.

Oracle's Larry Ellison has a Hawaiian island. The tech giant has bought the Hawaiian island of Lanai, the governor of the 50th state said.
"It is my understanding that Mr. Ellison has had a longstanding interest in Lanai," Gov. Neil Abercrombie said in an Agence France-Presse story. "His passion for nature, particularly the ocean, is well known, specifically in the realm of America's Cup sailing.
Ellison, Oracle's founder and CEO, bought 98 percent of the 141-square-mile island from its owner, Castle & Cooke, a Los Angeles-based company headed by businessman David Murdock, AFP reported.
While no purchase price was disclosed, the Maui News previously reported the asking price was between $500 million and $600 million.

How can someone buy a large portion of a US state? Could someone buy Manhattan if they had enough money?

Man, thats a big island. Almost half the size on Honolulu. I would think it would have cost more.

Pretty much any mid-sized to large IT shop will be running Oracle databases. Major software companies build their applications on Oracle backends, hell, even Oracle owns a lot of very popular products (PeopleSoft, Primavera).

Ellison: Hey there, Mr. Business Man. You've got problems, and with just a teeny bit of customization, our product is the perfect solution.
Business Man: SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!

[Lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$ changes hands]

Business Man: Hey there, Mr. Ellison. About that customiza....
Ellison: $urpri$e Butt$eck$!!!!1!

[repeat ad nauseum]

It was 98% privately owned by the same person, used to be a Pineapple plantation for Dole so was mostly owned by 1 entity or some such.

You could buy Manhattan if you had enough money, and every single property owner agreed to sell to you.

i hope he builds a bunker there and an airstrip for his MiG-29.

too bad it doesn't have enough range for nonstop san francisco to lanai. he should ditch the giant yacht and get an aircraft carrier.

Hes not turning it private. The resorts will stay open. The golf courses will stay open. They are all on long term and/or 99 year leases. The question is, will he allow more things to be built to attract more tourism? Will he help improve the islands economy? The previous owner lost $40million a year. I doubt Ellison has plans on doing that.

ellison, branson and so forth....if i was in that club there's no way i could NOT be a super villain with volcano hideout, subs, and all the other goodies.

is it still megalomania if you really are super rich and powerful?
