How did KC (3rd AFC West) and not Denver (2nd) make the playoffs?

The rules on the standing page is simplified. If both potential wildcard teams are from the same division, apply the division rules. Thus, KC wins because they have a better division record 4-2 vs 3-3.

They have the 6th best record, hence the 6th seed.

Oh, you must be talking the division. They are 2nd in the division. Look at their division record vs. denver's.
