the press was more controlled, people were more naive, at least before their first taste of battle. people are the same as they ever was, i remember hearing when the civil war broke out a million men volunteered to fight for the union, Lincoln didn't think he wanted so many so fast so he turned most of them down, later when the war became real ugly mess they had to turn to conscription.

Yeah and the Irish rioted for a week when they instituted the draft in the civil war. People have been watching too many John Wayne movies.

If Americans are more reluctant to go to war these days maybe its simply because prior to WW II we didn't have perpetual war. We didn't jump into ever two bit conflict in every third world country. War was considered a last resort for the most part and not the norm so of course when people did go to war they gave it everything they had.
