They even knew my name.

I registered the domain on namecheap.com with WhoisGuard.

Thank you!

this is what it says on the Namecheap site: "Free Whoisguard !
Now, any new registrations and transfers to us automatically receive a FREE WhoisGuard subscription to use on any domain registered with us. This is a $4.88 value, absolutely free! "

I incorrectly assumed that the domains were subscribed to WhoisGuard....I was mistaken, you must actively set this option after registering the domain.

yes, you have to manually set it up. it took me a while to figure it out the first time because they actually forgot to give me the WhoisGuard license when i transferred one of my domains to namecheap. so i had to ask for it.

and don't forget that the WhoisGuard license can be used on any of your domain registered on namecheap. so, if you have multiple domains hosted with namecheap, you can choose to guard your other domain instead of the one which you got the free WhoisGuard subscription with. one license for one domain name though, not one license for multiple domains.
