How detrimental is copius amounts of salt for your health?

An excessive amount of salt will result in hypertension, which can damage blood vessels and organs. If you have a high salt content daily, then the results won't be so hot.

Any ways to fix this other than lowering salt? I also have a lot of salt in my diet, but if lowering it is the only way to go...

not necessarily. Studies have shown that it only effects certain people. There's just as many people that have extremely high sodium intakes and normal blood pressure as there are people with high sodium intakes and high blood pressure.

True. Hypertension runs in my dad's side of the family so I just assume. Sorry about that.

I take in a great deal of salt. It helps retain water and keeps me from getting dehydrated so easily. (The guy in the Herman Munster suit on the old TV show used to be given salt pills every day to keep him from dehydrating too badly under makeup). Bodybuilders will take a bunch of salt because it reduces your body's production of the hormones involved in water retention, then cut out all salt from their diets just before competition and flush all that water out.

Hypertension is one worry, and is often a problem for people in the US who are descended from African slaves- it turns out that hypertension is also a way to survive dehydration, so more hypertensive people survived the boat ride over. If you have hypertension, too much salt will aggravate it.
