How dependent is performance of TightVNC with cpu speed?

I understand the slow speed when I access it from elsewhere due to low cap on upload speed . However, its still slow when I access through home network (100mb).

The server is running on Xp pro with sp2 on Celeron 1gighz cpu.

When I check cpu usage its between 4~5%.

The reason I am asking is because I recently saw VNC accessing a server in Houston from Chicago and it was close to speed on being on the machine itself @ houston.

is it the type of VNC?

Use Terminal services (a.k.a. Remote Desktop Sharing) instead, much faster.
