how dependant do you think our economy is on piracy?

i am NOT trying to justify piracy or anything, this is just because i'm curious....

i was just thinking.... broadband ISPs.... i bet they're pretty dependant on piracy. i mean lets face it... without piracy, about all there is left for broadband is pr0n.

and companies that make CD-Rs... burners.... etc

i'm sure these products would all be in demand even if there were no piracy, but i bet they would take a huuuuge hit.

Seeing how Broadband ISP services are now limiting bandwith per month, it seems piracy is getting a bit out of hand now.

agreed. "mixing music you own" is sweet, but overall, everyone knows where they get their sh!t from...

*hands a flamesuit to gopunk*

we're going down together now...😛😉

umm, i can see your point, but if these companies loosing money on pirated merchandise (software, movies, music) were payed what they were owed I think it would more than make up for the defiency in the CD-r industry 🙂...

...unless most of the people are like me and pirate merchandise just to simply have it, and would never have bought it normally, then getting rid of piracy wouldnt help 😉

gopunk, are we talking about music piracy or s/w piracy? The reason I ask is because there is a big difference in my opinion between the two?

well i was thinking of movies actually.... it seems like s/w piracy gives a lot less business to other companies. in general, i would guess that people pirate less software than music and movies to begin with... simply because you don't need or even want that much software.

movies are playing a larger factor these days (perhaps even larger than music) if you ask me. they're the ones that require a lot of bandwidth and storage space... oh there's another industry... hard drives

True, I've been using CD burners for backups and mastering at work since '96 and before piracy took off the demand was tremendously lower and prices were much higher. $5 a dsic not $5 a spindle and you couldn't buy spindles at Bartell Drugs.

But, all whining by the RIAA scum aside, piracy has probably cut into music and VHS/DVD sales enough to more than offset any positive gains from broadband and burners.

some people use broadband for gaming too...

and JudistPriest don't believe the hype.. these companies dont lose the billions of dollars that they claim they do because people would not buy all the stuff they priate if they couldnt pirate it.

agreed as well. free is free.......as I stop myself right here before I say something to get a vacation.

I like music piracy.

I dont see the music industry (in particular I'm talking about the RIAA and its ilk) as an important industry.

Nothing really bad would happen if they just went out of business overnight, people would still be around to make music.

I would much rather people spend thier money on more tangible goods than music.
