How dangerous is Kuwait these days for a Westerner?

I know that it's sandwhiched between Iraq and Saudia Arabia, both of which are distinctly unwelcoming at the moment, but what's the atmosphere like in Kuwait? Are there a lot of ex-pats who walk around carefree whereever they want, or is it the sort of atmosphere where you want to stay indoors as much as possible and watch your back?

I'm close to someone who's been there quite a bit lately. He seems to believe it's pretty safe. I wouldn't be there though.

My impression of the Middle East from recent news is that anyone who looks non-Arabic is probably in some level of danger. Kuwait is one of the more friendly countries in the region, but that is kind of like saying that the smallest bear in the bunch is least likely to hurt you.

My thoughts exactly.

I agree. I think the Kuwaiti people are probably the most friendly toward Americans as any in the Middle East, but it only takes a few fundamentalist wackos to ruin your day.

Hell, that's valid anywhere in the world for any reason. 😛

True, but I think the wacko-to-normal ratio is way higher in the Middle East than anywhere else right now. My brother-in-law is Air Force, and has served in both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. He enjoyed serving in Kuwait and was very fond of the people there. Saudi on the other hand he couldn't wait to get the hell out of.

I know a few ex servicemen who have signed up to work in the Middle East, some in Kuwait, I'd say about 30% of them have elected not to go back, primarily because of physical safety concerns.

None of the guys I know has been killed, but they ALL report they have friends who have been killed in the last year.

If your bro is after some tax free $ & is willing to take the chance, Kuwait is the ONLY place I'd consider. He should be able to come back & pay cash for a house & get settled. If he's the type that'll just blow the $ anyway, I'd strongly encourage him to stay in North America.
