How could this have happened.

As a long shot, might be that the IP number changed and the applications' ports are not open toward the new IP.

A virus has been unleashed into the network many IPs have been compramised. The virus is W32.Mytob and Microsoft is already trying to fix it. Basically they're shutting the entire internet off tomorrow....can you believe it? They've blocked ports to all file sharing networks so apparentely ventrillo and wow fall under that category?
 
That's probably the funniest scam/BS information I've seen in a long time. Where did you read that? Can you provide a link? (I need a good laugh).

Even if they wanted to, Microsoft could never "shut down the whole Internet" since they don't have control of any part of the Internet apart from what is running on their own servers (www.microsoft.com, www.msn.com, etc.). Also, if it was possible to block the ports to all file sharing networks, you can bet the RIAA would have done it a long time ago.

There IS a virus named W32.Mytob but it's not new (first discovered on February 28, 2005 according to Symantec) and it has very little to do with network/Internet connectivity. It's a mass-mailer virus that opens a back door on infected machines and downloads other files/spyware garbage to the machine. Some variants do modify the HOSTS file to prevent access to security sites such as Symantec so that infected users cannot download removal tools, but that's really about it. It wouldn't have any effect whatsoever on AIM, Ventrilo, games, or P2P applications.
