Centralization was a hotly debated topic among the founding fathers.

Precisely the problems we face now are actually described in the anti-federalist papers as potential dangers down the road. Back then however in 1776 America was more fragmented and it was more important to unite the states and thus the Federal government got most of the power. Been going ever since!
