I have a pal dvd i want to burn, but the thing is, i wanna watch it on an american dvd player. is there anyway to go about doing this?

i selected region free on DVDshrink, then i just analyzed and burnt it...my dvd player said the disc cant be played. What should i do? Thanks

Any halfway decent DVD player will work fine with either PAL or NTSC.
My ~5 year old Pioneer doesn't have any trouble at all with NTSC DVD's for example, neither does my parrents $75 JVC player.

Not true. Some players may be able to play both formats or hacked to play both formats, but for the most part, a player is either NTSC or PAL. I also have had problems reauthoring from PAL to region-free with dvd-shrink and a nero burn.

Maybe it's worse in the US, but I haven't seen a single player here in Sweden that doesn't play both formats.
The two example I gave were just two of many, just about all of my friends own NTSC DVD's since it used to be(and sometimes still is, especially with the low USD) much cheaper to buy movies from the US.

Granted, all of these players have been region free(obviously) but that's another matter entirely.

if you really really really want a menu then chances are youll have to pay lots of money for a new hardware setup....or you could just buy a dvd player that plays pal *gasp*

Did you actually try it in your DVD player? I've got two DVD players and both play NTSC and PAL equally well. You'd never know the difference.

That's the key. His current DVD player will probably not play this DVD due to region locking, not PAL/NTSC issues.

so there is no way to do it?

RE-AUTHOR IT.

It doesn't always work - others have mentioned PAL/NTSC issues. I've got a Region 2 DVD here, and it's been patched to region 1 with DVD Shrink 3.2, and instead of a region error in my DVD player, it just says "DVD cannot be played". The DVD is of course PAL. Solution?

Virtualdub-MPEG2, which doesn't always work with DVD files (audio loses sync), but it does work with this particular disc, and AC3 ACM to decode the audio. Virtualdub-MPEG2 is used to make an AVI file at 720x480 - use either XVID at high quality, or a lossless format like Huffyuv - which is then rendered to MPEG2 with Ulead Videostudio. I have yet to actually try the result, as Videostudio is taking its sweet time making the final MPEG2 file, probably because it is 16:9, not the usual 4:3 size.

Heh, I didn't think region locked players even existed these days 😀
