How complicated is networking over the internet?

My fiance is starting a company and the founders are spread throughout the U.S. They are deveoping a website which will be hosted and managed remotely, but is not sure how things will work with company files and software.

How complicated is it to set up a company network that operates over the internet such that software and file sharing is easy?

I guess this is what a VPN is?

OK, Google is my friend.

I guess we need to set-up a VPN between the various locations. Does this sound like a good plan?

Basically, at the beginning, our house will be the hub of things. We will set-up a LAN connected to the internet via cable modem (with a static IP) through something like this.

Then the other employees will log on to the network directly to access files and software.

Is there any other special equipment needed?

Yup, should use firewall/vpn appliances atthe host and for all users that want to log in. They will be used as the ndpoints to connect the networks.

Be sure and lock everything down the best you can. Hackers are everywhere and you need the best security that is available. Be sure that the Passwords used are very complicated using no dictionary words just letters, numbers and symbols make it tough to scam out the passwords.
